PRP Injections Q & A

What are PRP injections?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is the liquid part of your blood your doctor separates from red and white blood cells. It’s a concentrated source of plasma with a higher proportion of platelets found in whole blood. Platelets contain a large number of growth factors, which play a significant role in tissue-healing after injuries.

PRP preparation dramatically increases platelet and growth factor concentration to help your body use its natural healing capabilities for pain relief.

When are PRP injections helpful?

Doctors often use PRP injections to treat numerous injuries and illnesses, including:

  • Joint injuries and pain
  • Sprains and strains
  • Pulled muscles
  • Torn tendons
  • Tendinitis
  • Other sports-related injuries
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Fractures
  • Post-surgical injuries

The injections help reduce chronic pain, inflammation, and stiffness, and can improve joint mobility. Other uses of PRP injections include hair restoration and skin revitalization.

What happens during PRP injections?

Prior to PRP injections, your Onyx Direct Care specialist reviews your symptoms and medical history. They complete a comprehensive physical exam and might use blood tests or imaging tests, such as X-rays or MRIs, to diagnose an injury or disease.

If you’re a good candidate for PRP injections, your doctor takes a sample of blood from your arm and spins it in a centrifuge to extract the platelet-rich plasma. They inject PRP into the site of an injury or other areas of your body. The procedure is fast and virtually painless, although you may feel a slight pinch during needle insertion.

What should I expect after treatment?

After PRP injections, you might experience slight redness or swelling at the treatment site, but this is temporary. Your Onyx Direct Care specialist may recommend a series of PRP injections or other holistic treatments, such as osteopathic manipulative therapy or physical therapy, to help you achieve the best possible outcome. Over time you should notice enhanced healing, less pain, and a better overall quality of life.

Don’t settle for taking addictive pain medicine or undergoing invasive surgery when simple holistic treatments are available at Onyx Direct Care.
